Inspired Leadership – A Unified Front

In this week’s Inspired Leadership Series, we detail Week 2 of our Student Leadership:  Creating a Common Mission/Developing Values/Branding the Program.

Once your organization has determined why each of the leadership are present and how they can define leadership, they can develop common goals, values, and missions.  What does the choir program stand for?  What is important to them?  What does it look like within our program?  To our school?  Community?

You first have to begin with your own purpose and values for your choral program.  For ideas on this, see the planning post on our InspireChoir page.  Do you have a specific mission, values, and purpose for your students?  For yourself?

In high school situations, your students tend to have a stronger global point-of-view and can create the missions, values, and purposes of their choir program a little easier than younger students.  In junior high/middle schools, I have found that nudging the students toward a theme or catch phrase can help them focus their energies.  This year, our choir theme is “Lift Up Your Voice, Light Up the World.”  Just today, I took the time to build relationships and common goals to define what it meant to “Lift Up Your Voice” and “Light Up the World.”  Their answers were surprisingly detailed and profound for seventh and eighth graders.  While this was only one choir program, their answers centered on four anchors:

The Choir Itself

Lets people share their voice…

Gives us an outlet to be someone…

Allows us to have a voice in things…

Choir Members

We must grow stronger together…

Be the best people we can be…

            Be a family…

Have lots of emotion/smile when singing…

            Shine our light to others…

            Work together to succeed…

Make everyone feel safe, comfortable and at home…

Love each other through our melodies and harmonies…

            Lift up each other…

            Exude positivity…

The Music

Sing good/quality/meaningful music…

Because a life without music would be dull…

Impact on Others

Make others feel happy/better/comforted…

            Give our song to others…

Brighten people’s day…

Help others enjoy and appreciate the beauty in music…

Make the world a better place…

            Teach others…

Show others the power of music…

And these responses occurred in Week 4 of a new program.  I am excited to see how they expand throughout the year as we reflect upon and refine our purpose.

Until next time, keep lighting up the world, choir friends.
